This is one of the first pieces from what I call my deconstructivist period. Everybody knows that bars are usually placed in front of a window. Here we placed them on both sides of a window, posing those wonderful questions that art can pose: what and why? What are you keeping away from me? And why? Glass is known for its transparency, but here we cannot see through it.
Some people say OPEN UP is an extremely political work, for it is located at The National Museum of Ethnology in Leiden. The museum recently started a program returning cultural objects to rightful owners and the deconstructed gates can be read as a reference to that program. But to me it is about dealing with emotions.
