This bouquet is an ironic comment on the human desire for ‘nature’ in modern life. The work shows nature in its most controlled and cultivated context, while limiting the level of control to a bare minimum: the flowers are already dead. This way the work places a huge question mark with the modern idea of what we call ‘maakbaarheid’ in Dutch (‘makeability’, a concept deeply rooted in Dutch culture). The bouquet was carefully selected, every flower refers to many very important cultural phenomena. This text is too short to dive into them but real intellectuals will know that references are being made.
BUCKET 1 premiered two weeks after the opening of an exhibition of mine in Venice. To me it says: you can not control life, but you can commemorate it.
