Private museums have seen a tremendous growth in recent years. Over the last decade, more than 150 private museums for modern and contemporary art have opened their doors worldwide. They are owned mainly by rich entrepreneurs and their heirs and companies, as research by Dutch newspaper de Volkskrant shows. Click on the symbols to see a list of museums in a particular city. The bigger the symbol, the more private museums are found in that city.
How have these museums been selected?
The private museums in this list all have a permanent collection, changing exhibitions and a fixed schedule for visits. They are non-profit institutions and they receive no or hardly any government support. Private museums that did receive a significant donation by the state, for example the building plot of the museum, are excluded. Museums that are based in a building with a different main function, such as a winery or hotel, almost never made it to the list.
